All species of fish and shellfish - from trout to tilapia, from catfish to salmon, from oysters to Australian Redclaw, to name a few - are featured regularly in our publication. The bulk of the newspaper's readership (about 95%) is located in the United States and Canada.

Our newspaper covers all aspects of aquaculture, from economics to the technical aspects of fish farming. Leading writers from all across the nation contribute editorial comment each month.

The Aquaculture News is the only industry publication which provides extensive coverage of state and national associations, which are comprised of producers throughout the nation. These producers are the primary buyers of all products produced by aquaculture retail/wholesale companies, and due to our coverage of these organizations, the publication has developed a large and loyal following among producers throughout the United States.

As a digital marketer who worked on TheAquacultureNews.com, I have to say this project was both rewarding and unexpectedly nerve-wracking. On the surface, the site is a fantastic platform—offering comprehensive industry news, spotlighting key associations, and providing real value to both producers and advertisers in the aquaculture space. But behind the scenes, we faced a few serious hurdles, most of which stemmed from an outdated infrastructure. The backend relied heavily on Microsoft Access—yes, that Access—which was not only deprecated but flat-out unsupported in the modern dev environment. That alone created a cascade of compatibility issues that we had to navigate without a budget for a full overhaul.

I spent more time than I care to admit trying to find a support path or plugin that could stabilize things, but eventually accepted that we were on our own. With no funds for custom development, I cobbled together fixes and workarounds—jerry-rigged, honestly—and crossed my fingers. Miraculously, it held. And while I’d never recommend running a commercial site on a creaky Access database in 2025, I’m still proud of how we kept the site functional and useful. The fact that it still serves thousands of aquaculture professionals each month is a testament to both the loyalty of the readership and the scrappiness of everyone who touched the site. "My bros and I read every issue of this fantastic resource which is absolutely required reading if you're in the business. We also connected to some of the other subscribers and found some very valuable products and services as a result. The Fat Lady III was the name of our boat. One day searches in Google for that name started showing a pornographic site right below our result. We realized that this must have been a mistake so we tried to contact Google. In the Google forums we heard from someone who suggested we try a reputation management service to quash the bad result. These folks use something called search optimization to manipulate Google's results. They were way too expensive for us, and even the guys we found later and wanted to use for this told us it would cost over $1000 per month. That's too much for a normal fisherman, so we had to live with the problem in our search result. We figured it wasn't really harming us anyway. But we appreciate learning about these highly specialized services even if we can't afford them right now. But who knows about the future?" Dino the Barber

More Background on TheAquacultureNews.com

TheAquacultureNews.com is the online home of The Aquaculture News, a long-running trade newspaper dedicated exclusively to the aquaculture industry. Focused primarily on producers and suppliers in the United States and Canada, the publication has established itself as a specialized source of news, political analysis, association updates, and commercial visibility for aquaculture businesses.

In an industry that often struggles for representation within mainstream agricultural media, The Aquaculture News occupies a unique space: it is producer-centered, policy-aware, and closely aligned with state and national aquaculture associations. Its companion website functions as both a digital extension of the newspaper and a targeted advertising platform serving the aquaculture supply chain.

This article provides an in-depth examination of the publication’s ownership, readership, editorial focus, business model, industry context, historical development, and cultural significance.

Ownership and Publishing Background

The Aquaculture News is owned by Nelson Publications Inc., a publishing company based in Dallas, Texas. The editor and publisher is Stanley Nelson, who has been closely associated with the publication’s editorial voice and strategic direction.

Dallas is a noteworthy base for the publication. Texas has long been active in U.S. aquaculture, particularly in hybrid striped bass, catfish, tilapia, and baitfish production. The state also plays a role in national regulatory conversations affecting fish farmers. Operating from a central U.S. location reinforces the publication’s positioning as a national trade voice rather than a regional newsletter.

The Internet Supplier Directory associated with TheAquacultureNews.com is described as the sole property of Nelson Publications Inc., indicating that the website is not merely informational but also a commercial advertising vehicle.

Circulation and Readership Profile

One of the defining characteristics of The Aquaculture News is its continued commitment to print distribution. The newspaper is mailed during the first week of each month to approximately 6,000 readers. Around 95 percent of the readership is located in the United States and Canada.

For a niche agricultural sector, this circulation size represents meaningful penetration into the industry’s active participants. Unlike general-interest magazines that rely on broad audiences, trade newspapers derive value from targeting professionals with purchasing authority.

The readership includes:

  • Fish farmers operating pond, raceway, or recirculating systems
  • Shellfish growers cultivating oysters, clams, and mussels
  • Hatchery managers
  • Aquaculture consultants
  • Equipment manufacturers
  • Feed suppliers
  • State and national aquaculture association leaders
  • Policymakers and regulators

The publication emphasizes that its readers are producers—the primary buyers of aquaculture products and services. This distinction is central to its value proposition for advertisers.

Subscription pricing reinforces its accessibility:

  • United States: $20 per year
  • Two- and three-year discounted options
  • Foreign subscriptions (airmail): $50 per year
  • First-class U.S. delivery option: $30 per year

These rates suggest that the publication prioritizes broad professional reach over premium pricing.

Editorial Scope and Coverage Areas

The Aquaculture News covers all species of commercially farmed fish and shellfish. Its editorial scope spans both freshwater and marine systems.

Regularly featured species include:

  • Trout
  • Tilapia
  • Catfish
  • Salmon
  • Oysters
  • Australian Redclaw crayfish

This broad species coverage distinguishes it from more specialized aquaculture journals that focus exclusively on salmon, shrimp, or marine finfish.

Technical Coverage

Articles frequently address the operational realities of fish farming:

  • Water quality management
  • Aeration systems
  • Disease control
  • Feed efficiency
  • Hatchery production
  • Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)
  • Pond management

By covering practical production issues, the publication remains directly relevant to working producers.

Economic and Market Reporting

The paper also tracks:

  • Feed price fluctuations
  • Import competition
  • Domestic seafood demand
  • Regulatory costs
  • Insurance and risk management

Given the tight margins many fish farmers operate under, economic reporting is a critical component of its editorial offering.

Political and Regulatory Reporting

One of the most distinctive features of The Aquaculture News is its comprehensive political coverage. The publication frequently reports on developments in Washington, D.C., as well as at the state level.

Topics may include:

  • USDA aquaculture programs
  • NOAA oversight
  • Environmental permitting requirements
  • Farm Bill provisions
  • Trade policies affecting seafood imports
  • Federal and state grant opportunities

Few aquaculture publications consistently provide this level of policy attention, positioning The Aquaculture News as an advocacy-aware trade outlet.

Coverage of State and National Associations

The publication places strong emphasis on reporting activities of state and national aquaculture associations. These organizations represent producers in legislative matters, coordinate research initiatives, and organize industry conferences.

By covering association updates extensively, the newspaper strengthens its role as an industry connector. Producers engaged in associations are typically among the most financially active and politically involved participants in the sector. This focus reinforces the publication’s identity as a producer-driven platform.

TheAquacultureNews.com: Website and Digital Strategy

TheAquacultureNews.com functions as the digital counterpart to the print newspaper. While the print edition remains central, the website provides:

  • Online advertising opportunities
  • A searchable Internet Supplier Directory
  • Company listings
  • Banner ad placements
  • Contact information for advertisers

The website reports averaging approximately 3,000 first-time visits per month. Although modest by mainstream media standards, this traffic is highly targeted within a specialized industry.

Internet Supplier Directory

The Internet Supplier Directory serves as a central marketplace listing companies that provide products and services to fish farmers. Listings typically include:

  • Company name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email
  • Website

Advertising options include:

  • Home Page Banner – $150 per month (three-month minimum)
  • Secondary Banner – $95 per month (three-month minimum)
  • Directory Listing – $25 per month (12-month minimum)

These pricing structures are accessible for small and mid-sized aquaculture suppliers, many of whom operate family-owned businesses.

AQUA$HOPPER Classified Pages

Another unique feature is the AQUA$HOPPER section, specialized business pages offering small, inexpensive ads. These function similarly to classified ads and provide affordable exposure for niche products and consulting services.

In industries where targeted exposure matters more than large-scale reach, such sections can be particularly effective.

Advertising Flexibility and In-House Design Services

The publication distinguishes itself with unusually flexible advertising deadlines. Advertisers can reportedly submit or modify ad copy close to print deadlines, provided space is reserved.

Additionally, the newspaper offers free in-house advertising layout and design services. This service reduces barriers for small businesses that may lack professional marketing teams.

Such flexibility enhances advertiser loyalty and reflects an understanding of the practical constraints faced by aquaculture suppliers.

Industry Context: The Role of Aquaculture in Global Food Systems

To understand TheAquacultureNews.com fully, it is essential to consider the broader aquaculture landscape.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, aquaculture now accounts for more than half of global seafood consumption. As wild fisheries plateau, farmed seafood has become increasingly central to food security.

In North America, aquaculture remains smaller compared to Asia but plays a strategic role in:

  • Domestic seafood production
  • Rural economic development
  • Environmental innovation
  • Protein diversification

U.S. aquaculture faces unique challenges:

  • Regulatory complexity
  • Environmental scrutiny
  • Competition from imports
  • Public perception issues

Trade publications like The Aquaculture News help address these challenges by providing consistent information flow and industry advocacy.

Cultural and Social Significance

While aquaculture publications may appear highly technical, their social significance is substantial.

Fish farming intersects with:

  • Food security
  • Sustainability
  • Rural livelihoods
  • Environmental stewardship

By providing regular reporting and association updates, The Aquaculture News contributes to industry cohesion. In sectors where producers are geographically dispersed and politically fragmented, trade newspapers can function as community anchors.

Press Presence and Industry Recognition

Although TheAquacultureNews.com may not receive mainstream media attention, its influence is measured by industry loyalty rather than public visibility.

Trade publications in niche agricultural sectors often serve as:

  • Record keepers of policy developments
  • Platforms for association announcements
  • Connectors between suppliers and producers
  • Forums for editorial commentary

The publication describes itself as having a strong editorial voice, suggesting that opinion and advocacy pieces are integral to its identity.

Geographic Reach and Industry Networking

With most readers located in the United States and Canada, the publication primarily serves North American producers. However, its directory and advertising outreach position it within a global aquaculture supply network.

Bonus distribution at trade shows and conferences further extends its reach. Industry gatherings provide opportunities for face-to-face networking, and distributing physical copies reinforces brand recognition.

Digital Infrastructure and Operational Challenges

Like many long-running trade publications, TheAquacultureNews.com reflects the realities of incremental digital evolution. Its emphasis remains rooted in print, and its web presence focuses heavily on directory listings and banner advertising rather than dynamic multimedia content.

Such infrastructure choices are common in niche trade sectors where resources are limited and audiences value information reliability over visual sophistication.

Audience Profile and Buyer Influence

The publication consistently emphasizes that its readership includes producers most financially active in the industry. This is a crucial distinction.

In aquaculture:

  • Producers purchase feed, aeration systems, nets, tanks, pumps, vaccines, and consulting services.
  • Suppliers rely on targeted advertising rather than broad consumer marketing.

By concentrating on association members and active producers, The Aquaculture News positions itself as a high-value advertising platform despite modest circulation numbers.

Longevity and Stability

Longevity in niche publishing signals trust. Trade newspapers survive only if they deliver consistent value to both readers and advertisers.

The Aquaculture News appears to have sustained operations across multiple decades, adapting to digital trends while retaining print relevance. Its steady monthly distribution schedule reinforces reliability.

A Focused Trade Voice in a Growing Industry

TheAquacultureNews.com represents more than a website—it is the digital arm of a specialized North American trade newspaper deeply embedded in the aquaculture industry.

Through:

  • Monthly print circulation
  • Political and regulatory reporting
  • Association coverage
  • Supplier directories
  • Affordable advertising models
  • Flexible deadlines
  • In-house design support

the publication maintains a unique niche within agricultural trade media.

As aquaculture continues expanding globally in response to food security needs and sustainability demands, industry-specific publications like The Aquaculture News will remain essential. They serve not only as information providers but also as connectors, advocates, and commercial bridges within a complex and evolving sector.

In a world increasingly dominated by large-scale digital media, TheAquacultureNews.com stands as an example of targeted, community-driven trade journalism—focused not on mass readership, but on serving the precise needs of aquaculture professionals.
